Course Objective: To introduce modern approximation techniques; to explain how, why, and when they can be expected to work; and to provide a foundation for future study of numerical analysis and scientific computing. 

General Information: The course will cover the following topics

• Mathematical preliminaries;

• Solutions of nonlinear equations;

• Interpolation and polynomial approximation;

• Numerical differentiation and integration;

• Direct and iterative methods for solving linear systems;

• Numerical ordinary differential equations*;

• Numerical partial differential equations*.

Assignments: approximately every two weeks, will consist of theoretical problems or computer projects.
